Set of two late 18th century Chinese Export Qing Dynasty plates decorated in underglaze and overglaze blue, embellished with iron-red accents and gilding. Made for the Islamic or Persian market.
Each plate centers on a floral spray or bouquet, featuring a large rose or peony in blue on white ground highlighted in gilt among blue and iron red leaves and surrounded by a thin iron red border. The inner border (Cavetto) has raised blue dots separated from the rim by a thin iron red border. The wide blue border is decorated with gilt stars surrounding four oval white panels alternating with four rectangular panels containing blue floral motifs. The rim has a Greek Key design in gilt and an iron red edge.
The plates are irregular in size, with one plate measuring approximately 8.75 inches in diameter, and the other plate 8.5 inches in diameter, and all with a 4.75 inch unglazed foot and sitting 1 inch from the table. Both plates show wear to overglaze enamel and gilt paint. One plate has a single chip to rim with accompanying crack. The other plate has been broken and glued, with chips to rim at either end of reattached pieces as shown in photos.
Similar plates are illustrated on p. 150 of China to Order by Nadler. He notes that: “This pattern with gold starts on cobalt ground was the premier pattern produced for the Persian market, but examples found their way to Brazil and North America.”
