It is made of two or more layers of handmade mulberry washi paper laminated together and waterproofed with persimmon tannin. Katagami printing uses a technique called resist dye, where a paste is applied to the fabric with the katagami before dipping it in ink. The open space on the katagami will be a negative space in the printed design.
