Antique Japanese Katagami Kimono Stencil Katazome Japanese Katagami is a stencil pattern for dyeing textiles, used to print designs and patterns on kimonos and other fabric items. Using traditional mulberry washi paper, this small katagami stencil with silk backing features a bunch of False Solomon's Seal flowers, called Yukizasa in Japanese. The name literally means "snow bamboo grass".This antique Katagami was designed during the mid or late Edo period (1860) to early Meiji (1900) in Central Japan. It is made of two or more layers of handmade mulberry washi paper laminated together and waterproofed with persimmon tannin. Katagami printing uses a technique called resist dye, where a paste is applied to the fabric with the katagami before dipping it in ink. The open space on the katagami will be a negative space in the printed design.
