Design by Driza-Bone company. The origins of the Driza-Bone coat can be traced back to last century when a young Scottish emigrant Edward Le Roy began making wet weather coats for windjammer sailors out of torn cotton sails waterproofed with linseed oil. The windjammer ships travelled between Britain, Europe and Australia. Due to their iron hulls the ships travelled low in the water, making the deck very wet which meant the sailors required some form of wet weather gear to protect them. Some of the sailors settled in Australia as did Le Roy. He found the coats were still in demand as sailors and others took up work in rural Australia. Le Roy in partnership with a soap manufacturer T E Pearson began manufacturing the coats from a backyard shed in Manly, Sydney.

As the coat became more popular with rural workers its styling changed to meet their needs. It was made longer to protect the legs while on a horse and a fantail was placed in the centre back so it could comfortably fit over the horse and keep the saddle dry. Wrist straps stopped the arms getting cold and wet and leg straps prevented the coat from flapping open. A new oiling process was developed so the coat wouldn't go hard and crack in the harsh dry conditions of much of rural Australia.

These refinements resulted in a range of practical hardwearing garments which are increasingly identified as part of an Australian national costume. in fact Australia's team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics wore bright yellow Driza-Bone coats at the opening ceremony.

One of Driza-Bone's retailers, R.M. Williams, recognised the potential market for the coats in America and began exporting them in the late 1980s. Not only were they taken up as workwear but also appeared in a New York fashion magazine promoted as a fashion garment - the urban bushman look. This anticipated the early 1990s trend for workwear as fashion, that saw traditional Australian workwear companies King Gee and Blundstone exploited so well internationally.

The coats are hardwearing, comfortable and practical. They are also longwearing and Driza-Bone offer a re-proofing service for customers, or the customer can buy the garment dressing and do it themselves.
