Gorham Co. coin silver
flower and vine wrapped handle & branch & flower foot
covered sugar bowl.
This rare c1859 sugar bowl features the most rare of Gorham's hallmarks,
the lion facing left "COIN" mark, illustrated page 229 in Carpenter's
Gorham text.
The identical hallmark on the President Abraham Lincoln tea service, illustrated
in Carpenter page 44. and displayed in the Smithsonian collection.
Though identical hallmark, this is a far less ornate design, the sugar bowl's handles
and feet identical to an earlier c1850 Gorham and Thurber design, illustrated page 34,
displayed in the Art Inst. of Chicago collection.
This important c1859 Gorham covered sugar 8 inches tall and 7 across
handles and weighs 23 1/2 standard ounces.
Hallmarked as shown.
Period engraved Gothic initials for the original owners.
In very, very fine, near perfect condition.
Rich silver patina.
Retains the original hand carved, and cast detail throughout.
Handles secure and in fine state.
Stands firm on table.
Cover closes perfectly flush.
