This is a traditional vintage Japanese Kokeshi doll crafted by Akira Oe.
It is believed to have been created around 1987 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the discovery of Semi Onsen, a hot spring traditionally associated with Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159–1189).
The back is inscribed with "800th Anniversary of the Discovery of Semi Onsen."
The body features Minamoto no Yoshitsune, one of Japan's most celebrated samurai commanders, and Benkei, the legendary warrior monk who faithfully served him.
Their story is one of the most famous legends in Japanese history, making this a rare and culturally significant commemorative work of Japanese folk art.
