    Fotodiox Pro Auto Macro Extension Tube for Leica L-Mount Alliance mirrorless cameras are automatic tubes that transfer all electronic functions from the lens to the camera, including autofocus and autoexposure. Macro extension tubes are a wonderful alternative to expensive macro lenses. Macro extension tubes maintain the original optical quality and transform the normal lens into a macro lens. Increasing the distance between the camera body and the lens shortens the focusing distance and creates the effect of magnifying your subject. Because no optical components are added to this extension tube, the image retains the original optical properties of the lens.

    This is far more desirable than the close-up lenses, which attach to the front of the lens via a filter thread and alter the optical quality, resulting in a blurry image full of artifacts. Adding an extension tube increases the effective aperture, reducing the amount of light entering the camera. This means you need to either use a slower shutter speed or a higher ISO to compensate for the loss of light. If your camera is set to an automatic exposure mode, it will do this automatically for you. Macro extension tubes are an inexpensive and easy way to convert any existing lens into a macro lens.




    An extension tube is simply a hollow cylinder that fits between your camera and lens, allowing the lens to move further away from the sensor. This extra distance allows your lens to focus closer, which in turn provides greater magnification capability. Unlike most lens accessories, extension tubes do not add additional optics and are therefore relatively inexpensive, simple devices.

    An extension tube increases the lens magnification by an amount equal to the extension distance divided by the lens focal length . For example, attaching a 25mm extension tube to a 50mm lens will give you a magnification of 0.5X. So if the original magnification of the lens was 0.15X, then the new magnification is 0.15X+0.5X=0.65X. The shortest focusing distance also decreases to ~210mm.

    All camera lenses have some natural extension that is used to focus on everyday objects. Lenses with shorter focusing distances typically have greater natural extension, but also benefit less from extension tubes. Experiment with different lenses to see how lengthening affects magnification.
