Firefighting presentation silver water pitcher.
The Marquand's were the most important and successful silver-smithing family
in the first half of the 19th century.
Frederick apprenticed in father's New York shop. First listed independently in
Savannah Georgia 1819-1824 with cousin Josiah Penfield.
It is here, in Savannah where this rare firefighting water pitcher was made,
bearing the profile G lion hallmark, without Marquand or Marquand & Brother.
Returning to New York to manage father's firm, Marquand & Co. these pseudo-British marks
never again observed.
Thru the 1830s and 1840s Marquand was the most important, commercially successful shop in America.
Commissions from the wealthiest east coast families, their silver graced mansion up and down the east coast.
Today, Marquand silver displayed in the Metropolitan, Winterthur, Museum City NY, MFA, Yale University
and given his brief time in Savannah, southern museums Georgia Museum of Art. Telfair, Colonial
Williamsburg and Atlanta's High Museum.
Never monogrammed as likely intended to honor Department's Chief perhaps.
Hallmarked as discussed above.
This important c1820 Marquand, Savannah origin Firefighting pitcher 10 inches
and weighs 25 1/2 standard ounces.
In exceptional condition.
The interior clean as if little / never used.
Retains original detail throughout.
Rich, beautifully aged patina.
Stands firm on table.
