The Marquand's were the most important and successful silver-smithing family

in the first half of the 19th century.

Frederick apprenticed in father's New York shop. First listed independently in

Savannah Georgia 1819-1824 with cousin Josiah Penfield.

It is here, in Savannah where this rare firefighting water pitcher was made,

bearing the profile G lion hallmark, without Marquand or Marquand & Brother.

Returning to New York to manage father's firm, Marquand & Co. these pseudo-British marks

never again observed.

Thru the 1830s and 1840s Marquand was the most important, commercially successful shop in America.

Commissions from the wealthiest east coast families, their silver graced mansion up and down the east coast.

Today, Marquand silver displayed in the Metropolitan, Winterthur, Museum City NY, MFA, Yale University

and given his brief time in Savannah, southern museums Georgia Museum of Art. Telfair, Colonial

Williamsburg and Atlanta's High Museum.
