35 mm SLIDES – UNBRANDED

During the 1980s, I traveled extensively throughout Australia, the United States, Europe, and Asia, establishing dealer contacts and supply arrangements for original movie memorabilia. In many cases, material was traded rather than purchased outright. STARS ROCK AND MOVIE POSTERS was among the first Australian dealers to actively sell Australian movie material into the United States, particularly Australian daybill posters, which were highly sought after because they often featured artwork different from their American counterparts.

Through exclusive supply agreements and close relationships with several Australian film distributors, I acquired a wide range of promotional cinema materials. At the time, I was also wholesaling movie products to dealers throughout Australia.

One area that frequently raised questions among collectors was the absence of a studio name on some cinema slides. These unbranded slides are not bootlegs or modern copies. They originated from the Australian distribution system.

For major film releases, Australian distributors were often supplied with only a limited quantity of original studio-produced slides from the United States. To satisfy the requirements of hundreds of cinemas across Australia, additional duplicate slides were professionally produced locally from the authorized studio originals.

The small number of studio-branded slides were often retained for distributor archives, supplied to key exhibitors, or allocated to preferred cinema clients. As a result, the majority of slides distributed for many major releases were unbranded duplicates produced by or for the Australian distributor.

Only one original slide is available, together with a photographic proof. Once sold, it is gone.

These unbranded slides formed the backbone of cinema promotion throughout Australia and are an authentic part of the film's original theatrical advertising campaign. 35mm slides are a thing of the past; studio marketing is now entirely digital, and even one-sheet movie posters are becoming rarities as studios have largely gone digital, making them easy to display on monitors throughout cinemas. Progress, change is inevitable, ironically making the slides even more collectible. And a true 'blast from the past’.
