Original early-19th-century French naval chart depicting part of the island of Timor and several neighbouring islands, produced from surveys conducted during one of France’s most important scientific voyages of exploration.
This chart was surveyed in 1818 by Mr. Labiche and Mr. Bérard, naval officers embarked on the corvette L’Uranie, and was compiled and drawn by Louis de Freycinet, one of the foremost French hydrographers and explorers of the period.
The map shows the southern and northern coastlines of Timor, with extensive coastal detail, anchorages, and navigational soundings. It includes important inset plans, most notably:
A detailed plan of the town and harbour of Coupang (Kupang)
A separate chart of the Strait of Bourou, illustrating surrounding islands and passages
These insets reflect the chart’s practical maritime purpose, serving both navigation and strategic planning in the East Indies.
This chart originates from the celebrated voyage of L’Uranie (1817–1820) under Louis de Freycinet, a landmark French scientific expedition focused on hydrography, geography, and natural history in the Pacific and Southeast Asia. Maps from this voyage are highly regarded for their accuracy and careful engraving.
