Rare late-18th-century British exploration chart depicting the Shandong (Shan-Tung) Peninsula in northern China, bordering the Yellow Sea (Whang-Hai).

Prepared by John Barrow following the British diplomatic mission known as the Macartney Embassy, one of the earliest European attempts to establish formal relations with Qing China.

The chart includes:

• Coastal survey of the Shandong Peninsula

• Reference to the Strait of Miau-Tau

• Track of surveying ships and navigational observations

• Panoramic coastal profile view along the top margin

Early charts of the Chinese coastline from this expedition are scarce and represent some of the first English hydrographic observations of northern China.
