Offered is an original Civil War mortar shell fragment recovered from the Battle of New Bern, North Carolina. Making it a substantial and highly displayable piece of Civil War artillery history.


The fragment originated from a large mortar shell fired during the fierce fighting around New Bern in March 1862, when Union forces under General Ambrose Burnside captured the strategically important Confederate port. Mortars were used to lob explosive shells into enemy fortifications, and surviving fragments like this are tangible reminders of the destructive power of Civil War siege artillery.

History


The Battle of New Bern, fought on March 14, 1862, was a major Union victory during Burnside's North Carolina Expedition.
