Opened on April 3, 1982, the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome was a $55 million utilitarian structure designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Its ten-acre roof consisted of two layers of Teflon-coated fiberglass fabric supported entirely by air pressure from twenty 90-horsepower fans. Despite its austere design and frequent criticism regarding poor sightlines and a lack of amenities, it remains the only stadium in the world to host a Super Bowl, a Major League Baseball All-Star Game, two World Series, and two NCAA Final Four basketball tournaments.
The stadium's defining architectural feature was also its primary vulnerability. The pressurized fabric roof collapsed four times during its 31-year lifespan, failing to withstand the weight of heavy Minnesota snow and ice. The most notable failure occurred in December 2010, which required $18 million and nearly half a year to repair.
Professional sports in Minnesota eventually outgrew the facility. The Minnesota Twins departed for Target Field following the 2009 season, and the Vikings played their final game at the Dome on December 29, 2013. In early 2014, crews deflated the roof for the final time and completely demolished the structure, clearing the site to construct U.S. Bank Stadium.
