This large Edo period porcelain bowl has a deep body, flared rim and high foot, giving it strong form and clear purpose. It is painted in underglaze cobalt blue, with a central image of a phoenix among swirling clouds.
The phoenix is rendered with loose, fluid brushstrokes that give a sense of movement without relying on rigid detail. Around the inner wall runs a dense ring of scrolling foliage, framed by a repeating cloud-pattern border along the rim. The outside carries two wide bands of similar scrollwork, applied in softer blue.
