Description

A Japanese Arita blue and white porcelain bowl from the Edo period, with a foliate rim and a lightly painted landscape in the centre. It has a beautifully moulded body and dressed brown rim.

The painting is nicely spaced, with the pavilion, boat and mountain delicately done. On the foot rim are five marks from the kiln supports, used to stop the flat porcelain pieces to sag or become warped in the heat of the kiln.

It is good quality export, from a period when Japan was catering to western markets to compete with Chinese factories.
