This is "The Twin Cousins," volume four of the six-book Flaxie Frizzle Stories series by Sophie May (pen name of Rebecca Sophia Clarke), published by Lee and Shepard in Boston, copyright 1880. Sophie May was one of the most popular American children's authors of the post-Civil War era, and her interlocking series, including Little Prudy, Dotty Dimple, and Flaxie Frizzle, sold hundreds of thousands of copies and shaped the genre of domestic juvenile fiction in the Gilded Age. This volume is illustrated throughout with wood-engraved plates, including the full-page frontispiece and interior scenes. The ornate Victorian cloth binding features deeply embossed botanical designs in the two-tone brown cloth with gilt lettering and a gilt figure of a girl on the front cover, typical of the high-quality Lee and Shepard production style of this period. The spine reads "Flaxie Frizz Stories / Twin Cousins" in gilt. A period pencil ownership inscription reading "Carrie Schroeder" appears on the front paste-down. Measures approximately 7 x 5 x 1 inch.
