A very fine German 800 Silver & Niello trombone link watch chain with alternating rose gold vermeil links. The watch chain includes a traditional circular bolt ring clasp and a dog clip at each end and was likely made circa 1900. It is the perfect length to wear as a necklace.

Niello is a black metal alloy used for decoration. The art of nielloing was primarily practiced in Germany, Russia and France. It involved acid etching the silver so as to produce a permanent two colour effect of dark grey and silver.

The chain measures approximately 18 inches long, including its original dog clip and bolt ring. It weighs approximately 21.8 grams. It is marked with a “H.W.” makers mark and “800.” Wear appropriate for age, most notably to where the rose gold vermeil links have rubbed at connection points and some of the niello markings on the bolt ring.
