Item Specifics
Antique Conta & Boehme Boy With Basket & Anchor Spill Vase Fairing C1890 11cm
A charming Victorian porcelain spill vase produced by the celebrated German maker Conta & Boehme of Pössneck, Germany.
This delightful late nineteenth-century example depicts a young child wearing a wide-brimmed hat and standing beside a woven basket-form spill vase. The piece is further enhanced with applied floral decoration and a nautical anchor motif, creating an attractive maritime-inspired design rarely encountered today.
The underside bears the impressed Conta & Boehme shield mark together with mould number 3827, confirming attribution to one of the most respected manufacturers of Victorian fairings and spill vases.
Originally designed to hold paper spills used for transferring flame from a fireplace to candles and oil lamps, pieces such as this have become highly collectable decorative antiques in their own right.

Conta & Boehme operated in Pössneck, Thuringia, Germany and became one of the most important exporters of porcelain fairings, novelty wares and spill vases during the Victorian era.
Their figures were sold throughout Britain and America and became famous for their charming child subjects, humorous scenes and finely detailed moulding. Many examples incorporated practical functions such as spill holders, trinket boxes, match strikers and miniature planters.
The impressed shield mark and mould number found on this example place it firmly within the factory's classic late nineteenth-century production period.
