For sale is a 1979 (Showa 54) Japanese commemorative statue of the Buddhist Nichiren Shonin sitting in a zushi (miniature shrine). The statue is finely hand-carved from wood and is housed in a traditional zushi (miniature shrine) with a black lacquer exterior and a stunning gold-leaf interior. The statue has been marked with "Kaigan", indicating the statue has been formally blessed.
This is an authentic Japanese Buddhist statue of Nichiren Shonin, the founder of the Nichiren sect. This well-crafted beautiful piece was specifically created to commemorate the 700th Anniversary of the passing of Nichiren Shonin in 1279.
The statue and zushi shrine have visible signs of age and handling. The exterior of the zushi shrine has noticeable cracks, lacquer peeling, and old repair marks on the base and near the hinges (please refer to the magnified photos). The interior of the zushi shrine shows some gold leaf wear, age-related cracking, etc. The statue itself remains in good vintage condition with beautiful details. The bottom of the statue features a handwritten inscription in Japanese black ink:
