A substantial antique oil portrait depicting an elegantly dressed lady in a half-length pose, presented within a large gilt frame.
Painted in the manner of the Victorian School, the sitter is shown wearing a dark dress with finely rendered lace detailing, a pearl necklace and a pale shawl. The muted architectural and landscape background gives the portrait a distinguished period character.
The work is unsigned and the artist is currently unidentified. It has been painted in oil on canvas and subsequently laid onto a rigid board.
A decorative and imposing portrait that would make a striking addition to a traditional interior, period property, country house setting or collection of antique portraiture.
Condition
The painting has undergone extensive historic restoration and displays visible areas of retouching and overpainting, particularly around the sitter’s face and in other areas of the composition.
There is age-related craquelure, surface wear, scratches, repaired damage, unevenness and evidence of previous conservation throughout. The canvas has been laid onto board. The gilt frame also has rubbing, chips, marks, losses and general wear consistent with age.
Please study all photographs carefully, including the close-up images and reverse, as these form an important part of the condition description.
Unsigned and sold as an unattributed Victorian School work.
