Antique / Vintage Grand Tour Style Bronze Winged Lion of St. Mark on Marble Base
An excellent quality Grand Tour style patinated bronze sculpture depicting the iconic Winged Lion of St. Mark, the historic symbol of Venice. The lion is beautifully cast with a striking verdigris / green-brown patina, captured standing with one paw resting upon an open book inscribed with the traditional Latin phrase "Pax Tibi Marce Evangelista Meus".
The bronze is mounted on a heavy, highly polished rectangular block of distinctive reddish-orange variegated marble (resembling classic Italian Verona marble).
Dimensions:
Total Height: Approx. 5.5 inches (14 cm) — as shown in image.png
Base Width: Approx. 6 inches (15.2 cm)
Condition Report:
In very good vintage/antique condition. The bronze features a wonderful, authentic weathered verdigris patina that highlights the detailed mane and feathers. The marble base is solid with beautiful natural veining; there may be minor flea bites or light surface wear consistent with age, but no major chips or structural cracks. Please see all photos (from image.png through image_10.png) for a detailed look at the condition and craftsmanship.
A fantastic decorative piece for collectors of Grand Tour antiquities, classical sculpture, or Italian history.
Shipping Recommendation
Pack Carefully: The marble base adds considerable weight and is susceptible to corner chips if dropped. Wrap heavily in bubble wrap and ensure it cannot shift within the box.
