Rare 1940s-1952 Kenya Colonial Photo Album - Exceptional
Railway, Aviation, Vintage Motoring & Coffee/Tea Plantation Social History
(A.C.F. Hutchinson / RAF)
A 29 page Photo album with 156 photos present, out of 180,
meaning 24 of the original photos are missing
An
extraordinary, highly detailed, and thoroughly annotated personal photograph
album documenting British colonial life, industrial agriculture, and heavy
infrastructure engineering in Kenya/East African Highlands between 1946 and
1952 (with archival notes back to 1942).
Compiled by
A. C. F. Hutchinson (A.C.F.H.), an ex-Royal Air Force serviceman, this
album is a goldmine for social historians and specialist collectors. Nearly
every photograph is meticulously hand-annotated with purple and red ink,
providing names, exact dates, altitudes, vehicle models, and precise geographic
locations.
The album serves as a visual travelogue across early 1950s
Kenya, explicitly detailing:
The
Highlands & Rift Valley: Fort Ternan,
Lumbwa (Kipkelion), Tunnel Estate, Londiani Hill, Mau Summit (noting 8,322 ft
altitude), Molo, Nakuru, Naivasha, Makuyu Escarpment, Nyeri, and the Great Rift
Valley.
Urban
& Coastal Hubs: Nairobi, Kisumu (Lake
Victoria), Mombasa, and Port Reitz.
Group portraits outside the famous Silverbeck Hotel
directly on the Equator line (June 1952).
Rare
East African Railway History (EAR&H):
Includes a spectacular, historically significant sequence from April/May 1952
capturing a massive landslide/cutting collapse near "The Tunnel." It
documents "Mr. Wells and the breakdown gang" clearing the tracks, a
specialized repair train, and a dramatic shot of the "First train through the tunnel"
billowing smoke after repairs are completed. Also features coastal views shot
directly from moving passenger trains.
Vintage
Motoring & Overland Hazards: A dream for
classic car enthusiasts. The album tracks and identifies specific vehicles,
complete with East African license plates (KDA 495,
KDA 829,
H 9635).
Featured cars include a 1920 Hupmobile roadster
(nicknamed "The Hupp"), a 1951 Ford Consul
("Connie"), a 1947 Ford V8,
and a Ford Prefect. Includes brilliant candid imagery of a car stuck overnight
in deep mud ruts on Londiani Hill during the fierce 1952 rainy season.
Colonial
Aviation: Documents Port Reitz Airport (Mombasa, 1951)
featuring a vintage commercial airliner on the tarmac alongside hangars, plus a
rare look at the remote dirt airstrip of "Coxon's Airport" at Fort
Ternan.
Industrial
Agro-History (Coffee, Tea & Sisal):
In-depth coverage of the daily operations of the "Tunnel Estate"
plantation. Captures coffee cultivation (heavy flowerings, ripening cherries,
processing at the "Coffee Factory"), fields of commercial sunflowers,
pyrethrum fields at Molo, and the Kericho Tea Industry
(including rows of crops and a massive multi-story tea-drying building). Shows
traditional ox-teams pulling farm equipment alongside modern trucks.
Social
History & Local Personnel: Unlike many
albums of the era, this volume names many of the local African estate staff,
providing portraits and work details for individuals named Musa, Chimba, Kalebu, Marengea, Daniel,
and Onyango. It shows traditional hut
construction ("Chimba's work") and native tobacco farming. Features a
rare, historically sensitive photo labeled "Prisoners at work — Kericho
(1951)."
Leisure,
Sports & Education: Excellent depictions
of expatriate leisure, including cricket matches at the Londiani Cricket Ground (1950/1952)
showing the 1949 timber pavilion, matches at Nyeri, church fundraisers
("Church Sale of Work in Lumbwa"), and landscape views of the
historic Pembroke House School
in Gilgil (July 1951).
Wildlife
& Early Safari: Features early 1952 game
tracking inside the Nairobi Game Park,
capturing giraffes, wildebeest, and roadside wildlife encounters near Naivasha.
