This is a good Cased Set of Six Art Deco Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons in the Nail Top pattern. This was an old 17th century style of spoon that was revived in the 1920s and 1930s. The fitted case has a thin black leather outer covering, a cream satin lining in the lid and a black velvet tray to hold the spoons. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The spoons were made in Birmingham by well regarded silversmiths William Suckling Ltd and date to 1936. William Suckling founded his company in Birmingham in around 1895. They initially produced electroplated wares but in 1922 the firm registered their first mark at the Birmingham assay office to produce Sterling Silver items alongside their electroplate manufacturing. They produced a wide range of silverware for the table and general domestic use before they finally ceased trading in 1965.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after 90 years of use. The box is in good condition with just a few tiny scuffs and the hinges and clasps are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 10.5cm / 4.1ins long and the set of six, unboxed, weighs in at a very respectable 54.3g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter M for 1936 and the S Ld makers' mark for William Suckling Ltd.
