F4U-1D added mounting points under the wing, which provided more mounting options and stronger bombing, thus effectively attacking the solid ground fortifications and bunkers of the Japanese army. The devastating ability to attack the ground has played an irreplaceable role in key operations such as the Okinawa campaign, providing key fire support for the US ground forces. It is with this kind of on-call close air support that F4U-1D has become the air cornerstone to support the "island jumping strategy".
