What Is the CV Axle?

A CV axle, or Constant Velocity axle, is a crucial link in your vehicle’s drivetrain system. This component transmits power from the transmission (or differential) to the wheels, while adapting to the up and down movement of the suspension and the turning of the wheels. The CV axle is most commonly found in front-wheel drive vehicles.

Front-wheel drive vehicles have two, one for the passenger side and one of the driver's side. All-wheel drive vehicles have the above two CV axles, as well as two CV axles located at the rear.

Unlike traditional universal joints, the CV axle can maintain a constant speed transmission even at extreme angles. When a traditional universal joint rotates at a certain angle, its speed will slightly decrease or increase, which leads to vibration and wear. The CV axle eliminates this problem, providing smoother operation and higher durability.

Signs of a Failing CV Axle:

If a CV axle is failing, it can affect how your vehicle handles. Identifying the signs of CV shaft failure is the key to ensuring the normal operation of the vehicle.

1.Clunking Sound

A clunking sound when accelerating or decelerating may be a sign of a failing inner CV joint.

2.Clicking Noise While Turning

A clicking or popping noise when turning can indicate an issue with the outer CV joint. It can be more prominent when making sharp turns at lower speeds.

3.Vibration

Excessive vibration, especially during high-speed driving, can be a sign of a bad CV axle. Although vibration can also be a sign of other problems, if a vehicle vibrates, it is essential to have it inspected.

4.Grease on Wheels

The CV axle’s boot is greased and if the boot becomes damage, the grease will leak onto the inside of the wheels.

Note: It is recommended to replace both the left and right CV axles at the same time.If one axle malfunctions, the other axle is very likely to malfunction as well, because the operating conditions of the two axles are the same. Replacing both axles simultaneously can save future maintenance costs.
