Coin Description:
This coin celebrates the generation of Ukrainian artists of the 1920s and 1930s who became an engine of cultural revival, developing literature, theater, cinema, music, and fine arts, but who were ruthlessly destroyed by the totalitarian regime. One of the key hubs of artistic life was the Slovo (meaning word in Ukrainian) building in Kharkiv – a place where ideas that transformed Ukrainian culture were born, and at the same time, a space that witnessed the tragic fate of its residents. Maik Yohansen (born Mykhailo Yohansen) was a brilliant representative of this generation – a poet, prose writer, translator, linguist, screenwriter, and critic. He was one of the founders of the literary associations Hart, VAPLITE, and the Techno-Art Group A, as well as a co-editor of the “Literary Fair” (a Ukrainian literature and art magazine). In 1937, Yohansen was repressed and executed by firing squad, and his name was banned for many years. This commemorative coin continues the theme of the Executed Renaissance, honoring the contribution of Maik Yohansen and all the artists who created and developed Ukrainian culture despite severe oppression.
