Product description
Enhance your collection with this impressive, old Japan Samurai warrior bronze figure, beautifully depicting the celebrated vassal Mori Taihee. An immortal hero of the Kuroda Clan and the subject of the famous Fukuoka folk song "Kurodabushi," this majestic sculpture embodies true warrior spirit. The statue captures the dramatic climax of the legend: Mori triumphantly raising a massive sake cup (sakazuki) high above his head with his right hand, while his left hand grips the legendary spearhead "Nihon-go" — the largest spear in all of Japan.
The highly detailed figure is dressed in formal Kamishimo court attire with wide Hakama trousers, reflecting his prestigious rank as an elite member of the "Kuroda Twenty Knights" and the "Kuroda Eight Tigers." This iconic depiction of Mori Taihee has been a beloved motif in Hakata Ningyo arts and Japanese decorative metalwork for centuries. Full-sized bronze monuments of him still stand today at Hakata Station and the Koun Shrine in Fukuoka.
The craftsmanship is exceptional, featuring realistic facial expressions with a powerful brow and a lifelike, flowing volume in the drapery of the robes. The body is crafted from bronze-themed metal with a rich, dark patina. A sophisticated multi-tone effect is achieved by the contrasting gold-amber tone of the sake cup and the silver-finished footwear and spearhead.
Condition:
The overall condition is good for its age, featuring a beautiful dark patina that has developed naturally over the body. Some areas of the lower robe and the base show light surface discoloration and minor wear consistent with age and display use. The face, torso, and upper details remain excellent, sharp, and well-preserved.
