"American Mourning Doves"
Our name of Mourning Dove reflects the “Mournful” Coos that are sometimes repeated for long periods by males trying to attract a mate. To the ears of other doves, and scientific recordings, other coos are associated with alarms, greetings, advertising and telling its mate that it’s time for her to sit on the nest.
Mourning Doves form a pair bond for the breeding season and share in the care and feeding of their young. Nesting occurs only after the male has been accepted as suitable by the female, and after an aggressive courtship period that has the male puffing up his feathers and chasing her continuously on the ground or from perch to perch.
Their short lives — usually about one year — put some urgency to the whole process. Several clutches may be raised in one breeding season. Only two eggs are usually laid, and nests are used again for the next brood.

ITEM DESCRIPTION:
William Keith "Bill" Spielman, Sr., a lifelong resident of Seward, Winnebago County, Illinois, Hand-Carved & Painted this Amazing Mourning Dove decoy "31 Years Ago". Bill Spielman was born Nov. 24, 1925, at the family farm in Seward Township. Bill was the younger of 2 boys to father Ralph Edward Spielman Sr. (1896-1930) and Ida Mae (Benedict) Spielman (1899-1978).
William "Bill" Spielman attended Seward Grade School and Seward High School, and graduated from Pecatonica High School in 1943. Bill served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He graduated from Bradley University in 1949 with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. Bill married Doris Florence "nee Dean" Spielman (born 1925) on Sept. 18, 1948, at the Seward Congregational Church. He was employed as a methods engineer at Barber-Colman for more than 30 years. After retiring from Barber-Colman, he worked at Seward Screw Products for several years. Bill served the Seward Fire Department for more than 40 years, having served as assistant fire chief and most recently as trustee. In addition, he was a member of Seward Congregational Church, a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Patron in 1960 for St. Elmo Chapter in Pecatonica, a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Chapter of Consistory, Valley of Freeport, and he is a lifetime member of A.W. Rawson Lodge, 145, Pecatonica, having served as a Master Mason. He loves vacationing and fishing with his family at Fred Thomas Resort in Birchwood, Wisconsin. He also enjoys woodworking and gardening.
