The History of ... Panerai.... is the most famous Italian watch company. But keep in mind, Panerai is now produced in Switzerland, not Italy. Originally founded in Florence in the 1860’s, this “watch workshop” was commissioned by the Italian Navy to produce a watch that could be easily read underwater. The early prototype was actually fitted with Rolex parts.Giovanni Panerai and his family had no idea, back in 1860, just how significant the Panerai watch company would become a century and a half later. Panerai started his business by producing measurement and precision systems for the Italian Navy, which gradually lead to an affinity for watchmaking and other precision instruments. The company continued to develop in parallel with the Italian Navy, and the commandos were equipped with wristwatches produced by Panerai. In 1930, Panerai watches were well known in the Italian military and the company had an exclusive contract with the Navy to produce their watches and aiming sites for various types of weaponry. The ruggedness and durability of the Panerai watches is still symbolic today, and the company only started producing wristwatches for the general public in 1993...

For the most part, Panerai's watches are variations to the basic Radiomir archetypes formulae classic models. The SIHH 2016 Radiomir 1950 3 Days (PAM00663) is a faithful re-creation of the Egiziano Piccolo updated to meet the current standards of high quality sports watchmaking. Originally no more than 30 or 40 examples of the Egiziano Piccolo were produced, making it one of the most sought-after vintage Panerai watches. The distinctive, original element of the model is the brown dial, its color inspired by that of the vintage watches which have undergone the discoloring effect caused by the luminous material. Brown dial with faceted hands and smooth round bezel holding the Plexiglas crystal (a nice vintage feature in and of itself) in place. This watch bears resemblance to Panerai’s typical casebacks, is engraved with ‘Officine Panerai” patent text “BREVETTATO”, which refers to the patented luminous material used by the brand back in the day, a highly-prized vintage model. The watch is powered by a Panerai in-house hand-wound movement. It packs three days of power reserve. The brand experimenting while still staying true to its core identity.The fact that this dial connect this model to the Panerai story and extra little touches like those hands and the Plexiglass crystal amp up the vintage feel.
