Offered here is an original 1880's heavy wooden box end that is stenciled Hercules Powder No. 2 White 30 From The Cala. Powder Works. Fifty pound size, measures 11.50 x 7.25 x .75. The California Powder Works was located near San Francisco, established there in the early 1880's. The company acquired the Hercules Powder Company and the name Hercules was a jab at the nearby competing Giant Powder Company, as Hercules was the mythical Slayer of Giants. Paper tag on the back shows this was a trade to a fellow famous for authoring the book Blown to Bits in the Mine and other mining related books. From the collection of a well known Nevada mining collector, now sadly passed. A heavy wire has been attached to the back for hanging on a wall. A very rare piece of California Powder Works and Hercules mining history well suited for any wall or shelf. Thanks for looking!
