Antique Chinese pagoda-style bronze lantern in the form of a round tiered temple with cage windows and pagoda top, with a slight verdigris patina contributing to its character. At the top of the lantern is a Qilin figure which forms a hook for hanging. Historically, these lanterns were used in temples or gardens, often holding a candle or oil lamp.
Temple lanterns, particularly those crafted from bronze, have a long and rich history in East Asian cultures, serving both functional and spiritual purposes. They were often used in Buddhist and Taoist temples, as well as in imperial palaces and wealthy residences, to illuminate sacred spaces and gardens.
The lantern measures approximately 12.5 inches tall, roof is 9 inches in diameter with an 7 inch diameter base. The lantern would have had bells hanging from the end of its decorative beams, two of which are damaged. It also is missing two of six feet from its base. There are areas where the cage windows have missing or damaged bars.
