Antique Victorian / Edwardian Leather Travel Pocket Chess Set – "Patent" Marked
Description:
Available for auction or buy-it-now is a fascinating antique portable pocket chess set, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Designed for travel, this set features a beautifully engineered leather-bound folding board with an integrated peg-and-socket system to secure pieces mid-game.
The interior features a dual-tone brown and black leather board with star-cut peg holes. The borders are equipped with storage holes for captured pieces, and the left margin features a crisp, gilt-stamped "PATENT" mark.
Pieces:
• Features a complete set of circular metal-rimmed discs with bone or early celluloid faces.
• One side features crisp black illustrations, the opposing side features red illustrations.
• All 32 pieces are present, each with its underside peg intact.
Condition Report:
This item is in authentic, unrestored antique condition with clear signs of age and use, giving it wonderful character:
• Exterior: The maroon/purple textured leather casing shows notable wear, scuffing, and rubbing to the corners and edges.
• Spine & Hinges: The leather along the external spine has split/perished due to age, but the heavy brass internal hinges remain firmly secured by their original screws and function smoothly.
• Clasp: The original decorative brass ornate clasp plates are intact, and the wire hook closure functions properly.
• Interior: The internal playing surface is in good antique order with nice coloration. There is a small tear to the leather over the central fold area (see photos).
