Beautiful Antique Flat Cut Garnet Cross Pendant/Brooch. The glimmering garnets in a closed back setting with bezel set fronts. In addition to a loop bail, the item has a c-hook clasp and pin.

The Pendant measures approximately .75 inches long, with the garnets measuring +/- 17.5mm by 13mm. All stones are irregular in size and cut and have small chips or other signs of wear, the most significant to the garnet on the right which has a small chip as shown in photos. Total weight is approximately 3 grams.

The pendant is unmarked, but an acid test of the surface was positive for 9K yellow gold. For a variety of reasons common to Georgian jewelry, it is impossible to determine if all elements of the pendant are gold:

•Not uncommon to Georgian jewelry, the pendant is not hallmarked.

•If the item is silver-backed, gold-plated, or heavily alloyed, XRF will not give a true reading of the underlying structure or will have difficulty getting an accurate purity reading.

•The stones are set in a “closed-back” setting, meaning the back of the metal is completely enclosed and backed by colored foils to enhance the brilliance of the gems. This prevents accessing the metal for accurate evaluation.

Determining gold purity in Georgian jewelry is difficult because delicate closed-back settings and layered metal foils make modern non-destructive testing highly inaccurate. For this reason, I encourage you to purchase the item for its age and beauty.
