Dream Watch KAGUYA Moon, a mechanical automatic winding watch inspired by Japanese classical literature Phase
A fascinating dial and 3D moon phase display, 28,800 vibrations
The dial is dyed in the traditional Japanese indigo blue, and a moon phase display at the 10 o'clock position allows you to enjoy the phases of the moon, expressing the blue night sky. The Dream Watch KAGUYA is a beautiful watch that is handmade one by one, and features a high-beat movement that vibrates at 28,800 vibrations. It is a new product supervised by WANCHER, with a motif of an ancient Japanese tale related to the moon.
The newly released "Dream Watch "KAGUYA" is named after Princess Kaguya, the protagonist of "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," the oldest Japanese story, whose author and date of creation are unknown.
The story of a mysterious girl born from a bamboo who grows into a shining beautiful woman, rejects proposals from the emperor and nobles, and returns to her birthplace on the moon,
reminds us of encounters, the passage of time, and the distant universe.
The story of this mysterious Princess Kaguya also appears in "The Tale of Genji," written by Murasaki Shikibu in the early 11th century and known as "the world's oldest full-length novel."
About WANCHER
WANCHER Co., Ltd., which started as a fountain pen company in 2011, is a company that creates and sells products that combine practicality and traditional crafts.
Our main products are fountain pens and watches.
Our representative product, Dream Pen,
was a great success on Kickstarter in 2020.
The Dream Watch Urushi, which is also decorated with traditional Japanese lacquer, also achieved its goal in crowdfunding in Japan. WANCHER's products are imbued with the desire to "make art enjoyable for many people by combining it with practical items." The theme of the newly released KAGUYA is "the flow of space and time." No matter how much civilization advances, the phases of the moon, which have a profound impact on people's lives, are part of the universe and nature beyond human control. In order to create a watch that evokes the image of the faraway universe and majestic nature, we decided to create a watch that continues to show the time without stopping, using only gravity and human kinetic energy, without using a battery. We want people to feel the "importance of limited time and life" in this watch. The idea for KAGUYA began in the 1990s. We wanted to create a watch that feels like the universe is trapped on your hand and deliver it to many people. The idea came from our experience during the Gulf War. Even now, decades later, I remember the 360-degree horizon and the spherical, star-filled sky I saw when I was left alone in the desert after the roads were closed due to martial law and the sun had set.
That night was very quiet. Even though a war was happening right next to me in the desert, there was no sound of conflict, and I felt as if the moon and stars - in other words, the universe - revolved around me.
I realized that no matter what happens to people's lives, the universe and the flow of time continue to revolve around each person, and I felt a sense of calm.
At that moment, I heard the sound of my watch's balance in the gentle desert breeze.
Prompted by the sound, I looked at my watch, and it seemed to me that the "universe revolving around me" that I had just felt was condensed on the dial.
From my experience in the desert, I have continued to nurture the desire to create a watch that allows everyone to feel the universe and the flow of time, making them feel at peace.
In addition, he decided to create a watch that could be loved and equipped with a movement that could be used for a long time.
■Automatic winding
The driving part that drives a wristwatch is called the movement.
These movements are broadly divided into "quartz" and "mechanical".
The "mechanical" type can be further divided into "hand-wound" and "automatic winding",
and the newly released KAGUYA uses "automatic winding".
In "automatic winding", the rotor inside the watch rotates by the movement of the hand and gravity to wind the mainspring. The watch runs on the energy stored in the mainspring.
■Balance
The energy stored in the mainspring is used to operate and display the movement that moves the hands of the watch that show the time and the phases of the moon, which change in the window located at 10 o'clock on the dial.
The balance, which is the heart of the watch, is highly efficient, with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
In other words, it is an "8-beat watch" that ticks off a precise 8-beat.
■Dial
The deep indigo color reminiscent of a pitch-black night and the phases of the moon at the 10 o'clock position are imbued with a philosophy derived from "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter".
In the past, people associated the phenomenon of the moon disappearing from sight with "human death" and the moon reappearing in the eastern sky with "human rebirth".
The reason why "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter" has been loved for over a thousand years is not just because people are fascinated by the shining beauty of Princess Kaguya.
Perhaps it is because people felt the "mystery" and "reincarnation" of the moon itself, as well as the "eternal flow of time".
To express the "mystery", "reincarnation" and "eternal flow of time" embodied by Princess Kaguya, the main character of "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter", WANCHER chose Mother of Pearl as the material for the dial.
Mother of Pearl is the mother of pearl that produces pearls and is also abbreviated to "MOP" or "shell".
Thinly carved Mother of Pearl has a unique and beautiful luster.
The surface is dyed in indigo, a traditional Japanese color, to express the night sky illuminated by moonlight.
■Moon Phase
Dream Wristwatch KAGUYA's Moon Phase is a 3D printed version of an actual photo of the moon, and the 10mm diameter extra-large display is used to achieve realism.
The movement that shows the phases of the moon and the time is a high-performance movement with 28,800 vibrations.
HANGZHOU is used for this complex and sophisticated high-performance high-beat movement.
WANCHER has made it possible to offer it at an affordable price that is easy for everyone to obtain.
■Windshield and case
The windshield uses sapphire glass, which has excellent transparency and the same structure and hardness as the gemstone sapphire.
The case is carved out of hard 316L,
ensuring not only the beauty of the appearance but also robustness such as durability and impact resistance.
■Skeleton back
The back of KAGUYA is not metal, but transparent glass.
The glass is sapphire glass, which has the same hardness as the windshield. Through this sapphire glass, you can enjoy the movement of the clock hands and the mechanism that shows the phases of the moon.
First, the energy created by the rotor, a pendulum built into the watch, rotates by centrifugal force and is transmitted to the gears to wind the mainspring.
Next, the movement of the balance wheel, which rotates regularly according to the "law of the pendulum" and transmits the exact one-second intervals of the watch to the gears.
These two beautiful movements are so fascinating that just watching them draws you into the world of precision machinery.
The KAGUYA has a high-beat movement with 28,800 vibrations that ticks an accurate eight beats, and the Moon Phase function of a luxury watch, but that's not all.
The dial is thinly carved from Mother of Pearl and dyed in indigo, a traditional Japanese color, by hand, and is applied by artisans.
The KAGUYA is a masterpiece that will satisfy both everyday users and collectors, as each and every watch is handcrafted by artisans.
*Note
KAGUYA's Moon Phase mechanism has a 31-day cycle.
Therefore, please manually adjust the moon phase display once a month.
