Pompeii is director Paul W.S. Anderson's sword-and-sandal disaster epic, set in the hours before and during the catastrophic 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius. It unfolds across two registers simultaneously: a gladiatorial arena story built on rival loyalties and a corrupt Roman senator's scheme, and a full-scale natural disaster spectacle that levels everything in the third act.

Kit Harington plays Milo, a Celtic survivor sold into slavery who earns his way to the Pompeii arena, where he forms a bond with Atticus (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), the reigning undefeated champion. Their alliance is tested by Senator Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland), who has designs on both the city's commerce and on Cassia (Emily Browning), whose parents Severus (Jared Harris) and Aurelia (Carrie-Anne Moss) built their fortune without his favor.

Sony's 2014 Blu-ray release is the single-disc 2D version on BD-50, encoded in MPEG-4 AVC at 1080p and accompanied by a full DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless track. Extras include an audio commentary by Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt, deleted and alternate scenes totaling over 23 minutes, and several production featurettes covering gladiatorial combat training, costume design, the volcanic eruption effects, and the film's real historical context.
