This is a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Pill Box. The box is circular with a lift off lid and a bakelite inset in the base. The top of the lid is decorated with an engine turned chevron pattern surrounding a blank circular cartouche and the underside is gilded.

The pill box was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Marson & Jones and dates to 1931. Frederick Marson established his firm in Birmingham in 1845 and was succeeded by his son, Frederick Junior in 1896. He took Harry Jones as partner in 1915 and the company was renamed Marson & Jones, a name it retained after Frederick’s retirement in 1918. They remained in business up until the start of WW2.

Condition is fair with a few dings in the silver, as you would expect of an item that has probably spent most of its life in a pocket or handbag. The lid fits securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pill box is 4.5cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 1.6cm / 0.63ins high. It weighs 15.6g / 0.55oz.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter G for 1931 and the M & J makers' mark for Marson & Jones.
