Unframed steel engraving of “The Monkey as Connoisseur," originally designed by the English painter and satirist William Hogarth in 1761.The image served as the "Tail-piece" (concluding illustration) for the catalogue of the Society of Artists exhibition. Hogarth used this image to mock the obsession of contemporary art collectors with "Old Masters" and "Exotics" over living British artists.
The engraving measures approximately 8.5 inches by 12 inches. General age-related toning, largely on edges, as visible in photos.
