Lovely set of 27 miniature dominoes made in bovine bone, each with blackened spots and brass studs, stored in a decorated bovine bone box beautifully marked with a design of concentric circles and other geometric patterns on four sides. Lid has a brass tab at the end to catch the finger for easy sliding. Probably made by Napoleonic prisoners of war in England prison camps (1793-1815).

Such sets were often made from salvaged bone and housed in intricately decorated boxes—an extraordinary testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of POWs held in British depots and prison hulks.

The box measures approximately 3.5 inches long by 1 inch and 7/8 inches tall. The dominoes are of varying sizes reflecting their hand made original, but can generally be attributed to a 3/8 inch by 6/8 inch rectangle. There is a small crack at one end, and some age toning to lid as shown in photos. One of the dominoes was previously broken and glued.
