When should you replace the throttle body?
1.Persistent idle instability – A common pain point for 7th‑gen Civic owners
After cleaning the throttle body, idle instability may still remain. This happens because the ECU has not been reprogrammed / matched after cleaning. The ECU continues to control throttle opening based on the old carbon‑deposit condition, causing a high idle (1200–1500 rpm). Replacing the throttle body with a brand‑new unit, followed by the correct matching procedure, will completely solve the issue.
2.Delayed acceleration / loss of power
A worn throttle position sensor (TPS) or internal mechanical wear inside the throttle body can cause inaccurate TPS signals. This results in hesitation during acceleration, low‑speed jerking, increased fuel consumption, etc. Replacing the entire throttle body with a new unit restores throttle response in one go.
3.Cleaning cannot fix internal wear
If the throttle shaft is worn or internal seals have aged, cleaning alone will not solve the problem. The throttle body must be replaced.
Installation Instructions:
1.Preparation
Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the intake air hose and the throttle cable. Prepare common tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.).
2.Removing the old part
Unplug the throttle position sensor (TPS) wiring connector. Remove the throttle body mounting bolts (typically 2 bolts + 2 nuts). Take off the old throttle body and the sealing gasket.
3.Transferring accessories (if applicable)
If the original throttle body has attached components such as an idle air control valve, coolant bypass pipe, etc., remove them and install them onto the corresponding positions of the new throttle body.
4.Installing the new part
A new sealing gasket must be installed. Place the new gasket on the intake manifold flange, then mount the new throttle body assembly. Tighten the mounting bolts in a diagonal sequence. Connect the TPS wiring connector and ensure it is fully locked.
5.Reset and matching / learning
Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and let it idle for 10–15 minutes to allow the ECU to perform basic learning. It is strongly recommended to use a Honda diagnostic tool (HDS) to execute the "ETCS" throttle position sensor matching procedure to ensure normal idle operation.
