Herbie Hancock started his career with trumpeter Donald Byrd's group, and later joined the Miles Davis Quintet where he he becam one of the primary architects of the post-bop sound. In the 1970s, he experimented with fusion, funk, and electro styles. Hancock's best-known compositions include "Camtaloupe Island", "Watermelon Man", "Maiden Voyage", and "Chameleon". During the 1980s, he was very active and had a hit single with the electronic instrumental "Rockit". He won an Academy Award, 14 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. In 2024, Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph ranked Hancock as the greatest keyboard player of all time. In 2025, he received the Polar Music Prize. His albums include: Takin' Off, Inventions and Dimensions, Empyrean Isles, Maiden Voyage, The Prisoner, Crossings, Head Hunters, Man-Child, and others. Others he has collaborated with include Freddie Hubbard, Rolland Kirk, Hank Mobley, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Stanley Turrentine, Jackie McLean, and others.
