"Au Square" (At the Square), an original color lithograph by Henri Evenepoel, published in L'Estampe Moderne No. 7 in 1897. This lithograph has the original raised stamp, which is displayed in a cut-out at the bottom right of the frame.

The artwork (without the mat) measures about 9" x 13". The framed piece measures about 17" x 21 3/4". There is some dust on the mat which would benefit from cleaning.

Henri Jacques Edward Evenepoel (1872-1899) was a Belgian painter known for his portraiture and color harmony. Evenepoel entered the atelier of Gustave Moreau in 1893, which put him in contact with Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault, Albert Marquet, and others at the forefront of the French artistic world at the time. His first solo exhibition came at the Brussels Cercle Artistique (December 1897 – January 1898). Evenepoel's most important works are associated with Fauvism. He died of typhus in Paris at age 27.

Au Square depicts a mother -- the artist's partner Louise -- and their son walking in a park.

Our father loved the style of the early 1900s and collected art that evoked that era. He lived in Europe during the late 1980s, which is when he probably purchased this piece. A sticker on the back shows a price of £180, so it was likely purchased in England.
