The Pan-American Magazine (Volume II, No 7, Oct 1900) was a monthly periodical dedicated to the promotion of Pan-Americanism, focusing on the commercial, historical, and geographic interests of nations across the Western Hemisphere.
The October 1900 issue was published exactly seven months before the opening of the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, NY. (May–November 1901). During this period, the magazine documented the transition from blueprints to physical reality. By late 1900, the publisher was under immense pressure to prove the fair would be ready. They shifted from artistic "vision" pieces to photographs and reports on construction milestones.
This specific issue documented the peak of the construction phase, known as the "Building Year." Key features included:
- Construction Progress: Photography and updates on the nearing completion of the Electric Tower (the centerpiece of the fair) and the Agriculture Building.
- The Color and Light Plan: Detailed features on C.Y. Turner's color scheme and Henry Rustin's electrical plan. The October issue highlighted how the "Rainbow City" would transition from dark, earthy tones at the entrance to brilliant whites and golds at the Electric Tower.
- International Participation: Updates on the exhibits being shipped from Central and South American nations, reinforcing the fair's theme of "Pan-Americanism" and the commercial ties between the Americas.
- The Midway Attractions: Promotional spreads for the more "sensational" side of the fair, including early previews of "A Trip to the Moon" and the "Venice in America" canal system.
- The "Niagara Frontier" Advantage: Essays highlighting Buffalo's strategic position as a hub of hydroelectric power from Niagara Falls, which was to be the literal power source for the fair's unprecedented 200,000 lightbulbs.
