Here we have a good quality, stylish Art Deco Silver Plate Cocktail Shaker with a 1.5pt capacity. The cylindrical body tapers slightly outwards to the domed lid and cylindrical neck. The spout has a screw fit lid and the main lid has a deep cork inside which goes down into the neck of the shaker. There is an elegant sweeping handle with a flat top.
The shaker was made in Birmingham by Barker Brothers and dates to the late 1920s to 1930s. Founded in 1801 by Mary Barker, the firm became Barker Brothers in 1886 when Mary's grandsons were in control. They were based in Birmingham but also had pieces assayed in Chester and London. They were very successful silversmiths and electroplaters and remained in business up until 1992, latterly under the name Barker-Ellis Silverware.
Condition is fair, with a few dings and a small amount of plate loss, primarily on the lid of the spout and the top of the main lid, the areas you would expect to be handled the most. This shaker has definitely made a lot of cocktails! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cocktail shaker stands 22.3cm / 8.8ins high, is 15.3cm / 6ins from spout to handle and 8.2cm / 3.2ins across at its widest point. It weighs 525g / 18.5oz.
The underside of the base is stamped EPNS for silver plate and has the clover leaf trademark of Barker Brothers.
