Where Bodywork Began

Before chiropractic, before physiotherapy, before massage therapy — there was the Swedish Movement Cure. Developed by Pehr Henrik Ling in the early 1800s, medical gymnastics combined systematic exercise with manual manipulation to treat disease. This collection traces those origins with four foundational texts on Swedish medical gymnastics plus the rare 1843 Essay on the Science of Bone Setting — documenting the American bone-setting tradition that preceded chiropractic.

03 Overview

The Swedish Movement Cure was the direct ancestor of modern physical therapy. Berglind's Mechanotherapy and Hartelius' Swedish Movements document the techniques that trained the first generation of manual therapists.

Anders Wide's Hand-book of Medical Gymnastics (two editions included) provides the most detailed technical manual of the Swedish system — exercise prescriptions organized by condition and body region.

Waterman Sweet's Essay on the Science of Bone Setting (1843) documents the American bone-setting tradition — lay practitioners who reduced joint dislocations and 'set' spines before chiropractic existed. A rare and fascinating text. All public domain PDFs.
