01 Highlights

The Father of American Naturopathy

Benedict Lust coined the term 'naturopathy' and built the profession from scratch. His Universal Naturopathic Encyclopedia (1918-19) is a 1,416-page yearbook of drugless therapy — hydrotherapy, herbalism, diet therapy, manual medicine, electrotherapy, and more. It's both a clinical reference and a snapshot of the profession at its peak. Also included: 'Return to Nature!' by Adolf Just — the German nature-cure manifesto that inspired Lust.

03 Overview

The Universal Naturopathic Encyclopedia, Directory, and Buyers' Guide (1918-19) is Benedict Lust's masterwork — the most comprehensive snapshot of the naturopathic profession ever compiled. Every modality, every practitioner directory, every supplier.

'Return to Nature!' by Adolf Just, translated by Lust, is the German nature-cure manifesto that inspired Lust to bring natural healing to America. It argues for a complete return to natural living — diet, clothing, housing, and healing.

Together, these documents tell the founding story of American naturopathy. Public domain PDFs.
