This is an antique etched sweetheart brooch, with a swallow, a rose and an ivy leaf, all popular motifs in Victorian-era jewelry. “Sweetheart brooches” were often given as a token of affection to a loved one embarking on a long journey, particularly by sailors.
The swallow is known to mate for life and holds deep symbolism related to love, faithfulness, and the promise of a safe return home. The bird was seen as a symbol of hope and a reminder of the love waiting for them to return. The rose is associated with love and ivy is symbolic of fidelity (like ivy, I cling to you).
The brooch measures approximately 1.7 inches long and it weighs approximately 2.7 grams. The back of the pin is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1900 and retains its original c clasp and pin.
