Antique Japanese Ise Katagami Kimono Stencil Katazome Japanese Katagami is a stencil pattern for dyeing textiles used for printing designs and patterns on kimonos and other fabric items. Using traditional mulberry washi paper, this Ise katagami stencil features a bold vertical line pattern made by tiny dots.This antique Katagami was designed in Central Japan during the mid to late Edo period (1860) and into the early Meiji period (1900). It is made of two or more layers of handmade mulberry washi paper laminated together and waterproofed with persimmon tannin. Katagami printing uses a technique called resist dyeing, in which a paste is applied to the fabric with the katagami before dipping it in ink. The open space on the katagami will be a negative space in the printed design.
