Authentic 1956 Mexican Ex-Voto Retablo — Santa Librada Miracle Healing
Original Spanish Inscription (exactly as written): “Matilde Hernandez R. agradezco a Santa Librada por sanarme de una terrible llaga en la pierna. Milagron Concevido. 1956 Freznillo Zacatecas.”
English Translation: “Matilde Hernandez R. thanks Santa Librada for healing me from a terrible sore on my leg. Miracle granted. 1956 Fresnillo, Zacatecas.”
This stunning hand-painted tin retablo (ex-voto) was created in 1956 in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico. It is a personal thanksgiving to Santa Librada (Saint Liberata / Wilgefortis) — the crucified female saint — for miraculously healing a severe leg wound. The folk-art style is classic mid-20th-century Mexican votive painting: vibrant colors, dramatic clouds, and heartfelt narrative.
Size: 8" × 8.5" (approx.) Medium: Oil/enamel on tin with original patina (back shows authentic rust and age — see photos) Condition: Excellent for age — no major cracks, flaking, or restoration. Colors remain bright. Handwritten text fully legible.
Provenance: Sourced from a private collection via the Trocadero Streets antique market in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico (same origin as other high-quality pieces in my store). These personal ex-votos are highly collectible folk art and are becoming increasingly rare on the market.
Why collectors love this piece:
Perfect addition to any Mexican folk art, retablo, or religious collection.
