This Nkisi Nkondi figure embodies the spiritual and ritualistic traditions of the Kongo peoples, with its carved wooden body adorned with cloth-wrapped bundles containing spiritual substances. These bundles, tied securely across the torso and legs, were added by a ritual specialist, or nganga, to activate the figure’s power and direct its purpose. Unlike many Nkisi Nkondi figures featuring nails or blades, this example uses fabric bundles to emphasise spiritual containment.

A mirror embedded in the abdomen symbolises a portal to the spirit world, allowing the nkisi to perceive hidden threats and fulfill its role as a protector. The figure’s dynamic stance, with one arm raised and its mouth open, projects authority and readiness to act, reflecting its role in enforcing justice or safeguarding the community.

Made in the early 20th century, this figure showcases the collaboration between Kongo artisans and ritual specialists.
