This carved and painted totem pole reflects the narrative richness of Alaskan carving traditions. Standing as a vertical tableau, the upper section features a bird head with carved beak, bulging eyes, and red and black painted detail. Beneath this is a stylised fish, its curved body set horizontally across the midsection. Below, a smiling mask-like face sits atop a fourth figure with extended wings or fins, painted in shades of blue, black, and white.

The figures are stacked in the traditional manner, with clear outlines and incised detailing used to emphasise facial features, plumage, and fins. The painted decoration remains vivid, though naturally softened with age. On the reverse, handwritten in ink, are the inscriptions “North American Indian Totem Pole” and “From H.H.S collection 1920,” likely added by a later owner. The surface of the wood, particularly on the back, shows signs of natural ageing and wear.
